Greatness is not found in power, possession, or position but observed in humbleness, service, and good character.
Good moral character is an ideal state of a person’s beliefs and values that is considered most beneficial to society. It is the groundwork for growth, healthy relationships, and success. It is the edifice on which an individual rests just as “No worthy building can be erected on a weak foundation, so no lasting reputation worthy of respect can be built on a weak character.”
Following are the virtues of a good moral character.
Truthfulness: Stay honest, truthful, and committed to the words, and always build trust and relations.
Compassion: Show concern and understanding of others’ prospects by being open-minded, reasonable, and impartial.
Generosity: Cooperate, support, and assist without expecting anything in return. It can be your time, words, money, advice, or even suggestions.
Gratefulness: Express thankfulness and contentment for what you are blessed with rather than being unthankful and ungrateful for certain situations as Allah knows better what and when.
Modesty: Be modest and decent inside out to satisfy moral, religious, and spiritual values encompassing physical outlooks and inner thoughts.
Regulations: Have self-control, self-discipline, and strength to control the actions and words even when something is ostracized.
Responsibility: Take responsibility for all your work and look for the best in situations. Keep in mind that no one but Almighty Allah is watching us every time.
Acceptance: Accept the ideas and opinions of others with grace, dignity, and respect. Have valor in life and high spirits to accept the challenges.
In my opinion, people with good moral character attain peace of mind, leadership effectiveness, confidence, live a purpose-driven life, and do exactly what is targeted to make life as good as gold. Such people are always recognized respectfully.
The first and foremost thing is to become a good human being. The vital part is to realize the positive side and reduce the negative ones. A good moral character does not depend on your status, race, or color but upon your insights and the way you treat others.
The second thing is to adopt a virtuous character as a Muslim. It includes kindness, forgiveness, justice, helping others, keeping promises, controlling anger, and shielding thoughts.
Allah (S.W.T) says in The Holy Quran:
“A great mercy of Allah to you is that you are gentle and kind towards mankind; for had you been harsh and hard-hearted they would all have broken away from you.”
Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
“The nearest of you to me on the day of judgment will be the one who is the best in character.” (Sahih Al Bulkhari8:73:56).
The third thing is to demonstrate a good moral character as a family person. It is to put your family before yourself, give warmth and love to your relations, make the right choices, guard your emotions, and forgive. It for sure benefits the generation in imbibing moral values and eradicating negative mental tendencies.
The fourth thing is to become morally decent in the workplace. Remember that a family is not always a blood relation. There is another family which we make through our workforce. Be devoted, loyal, and truthful to the place you are associated with. The most important expression is effective communication, and exhibiting a high standard of ethical behavior.
Good moral character is not formed in a week or a month; it is shaped day by day. A person must strive within himself to exhibit a good character trait. Self-reflection is the way to aspire for the best we can be.
“Watch your thoughts as they lead to attitude, watch your attitude as they lead to words, watch your words as they lead to actions, watch your actions as they lead to habits, watch your habits as they form your character, and watch your character as it determines your destiny.”
