The word Modesty comes from the Latin word “Modestus”. It means keeping within measures. Modesty is defined as an act of showing gracefulness in behavior, walk, dressing, speech, and thoughts.
Modesty in Islam is defined as the attribute that protects us from the act that is disliked by The Almighty Allah. The concept of modesty in Islam is holistic. Islam emphasizes modesty the most. The code of modesty in Islam includes lowering the voice, avoiding high pitch speech, positive conduct, elegant dressing, guard your brain with devilish thoughts, maintain dignity, and respect.
Allah says in Quran:
Say to the believing men and women, they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty. That is purer for them and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do (Al Quran 24: 30-31).
Modesty in action means showing positive accomplishment without inflating arrogance and listening to pieces of advice, which can lead you to learn a great deal about yourself.
Modesty can be classified into several parts. Some of them are mentioned below:
i. Modesty in behavior means that a person should be humble, and puts the need of others ahead of his own needs. It means to be kind, cooperative, and adaptable to others.
ii. Modesty in speaking means that one should perform a positive role for others by his pleasant and kind words.
iii. Modesty in attire means to wear a covered and graceful dress. According to Quran and Sunnah ALLAH (S.W.T) has commanded men and women to maintain modesty. For men, it is prohibited to wear silk clothing and gold ornament. For women, they should carry attire that satisfies spiritual, stylistic requirements for the reason of faith, religion, personal perspective, and to provide a good morally sound influence to the people interacting with. Modesty is the best jewel of women. A woman dressed modestly is a pearl in its shell. The most visible and practiced form of modesty for women in Islam is Hijab that is to cover the head.
Allah says in Quran:
O’ Prophet tells your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw the Hijab. ( Al Quran 9: 33-59)
So what if modern looks are the topic in magazines? “Modesty” is the topic in the Quran.”
The Prophet (SAW) said:
Every religion has a distinctive characteristic, and the characteristic of Islam is modesty. Faith consists of more than sixty branches, and modesty is a part of faith (Sahih al Bukhari).
As a true Muslim, and Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) we need to do an honest assessment of ourselves.
