Once again, the delightful month of Ramadan has arrived; enveloped with its serenity and bliss. It is the month of mercy, tranquility, and blessings. The month in which The Holy Quran was revealed, and the month of celebration of being a Muslim.
During this month, we practice self-restraint while abiding by the ordainment of Allah.
Fasting is mentioned in Surah Baqarah in The Holy Quran. Allah The Almighty has instructed us to observe fasts in the month of Ramadan so that we may attain Taqwa. Taqwa means to be conscious and aware of Allah to protect ourselves from negative aspects.
Narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.”
One of the greatest tricks of Shaitaan is to make us pessimistic and hopeless. He doesn’t want us to be hopeful and wants us to believe that we aren’t good enough. The most essential things in our relationship with Allah are asking Him and trusting Him. Allah places shaitaan away this month for us to train ourselves to be optimistic and to recharge our faith. It’s about learning self-discipline and creating healthy habits.
Our main focus should be on our spiritual development so that we can become a better version of ourselves.
Focusing on certain aspects can help us to elevate our consciousness of Allah.
One of the areas is worship; setting a goal to offer prayer consistently and understanding the meaning behind the Verses of the Quran.
Another area is studying; studying the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and following it can assist us in developing characteristics adored by Allah.
When we are insightful about ourselves and aware of our shortcomings but we still try our best to improve ourselves with sincere intentions then Allah guides our hearts.
Fasting teaches us reliance and patience; it teaches us to submit to the will of Allah which is why Allah has a great reward for it.
Narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A):
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “(Allah said), ‘Every good deed of Adam’s son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.’
When we pass the whole day by guarding our actions and senses, it reminds us of the purpose of our existence and the main reason for which we are sent to this world i.e for being tested. As we break our fast at the time of Maghrib (Sunset Prayer), we feel joy and contentment. In the same way, if we would pass the test of
this life, we would forget all the difficulties we faced in this world.
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A) narrated that:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There are two joys for the fasting person: the joy when he breaks his fast, and the joy of when he meets his Lord.”
Ramadan is a journey and a search to become closer to Allah. Quran and Sunnah are the blessings that can help us to find our way back to the home that was given as a gift to our father Hazrat Adam (A.S).
May Allah make our commitment to His guidance sincere and pure and may He make this training of Ramadan last in us and drive the spirit of it in the rest of our lives Aameen.
